01What FIFO actually isFIFO is a work arrangement, not a job title.

Fly-in fly-out workers travel to a site for a rostered block of work, live in camp or site accommodation, then return home for rostered time off. Some roles use drive-in drive-out or bus-in bus-out arrangements instead.

The work may be in mining, construction, maintenance, energy or another remote operation. Many people on site support the operation without working directly in extraction or operating heavy machinery.

  • Long shifts, early starts and strict safety procedures are common.
  • Travel days, the point of hire and who pays for travel vary between employers.
  • Camp standards, meals, rooms, facilities and phone coverage vary by site.
  • Rosters can include patterns such as 8 days on / 6 off, 2 weeks on / 1 off, or other arrangements.
02FIFO jobs and role typesRemote operations need far more than one kind of worker.

The right starting point depends on your existing experience, licences, location, work rights and the roles employers are actually advertising. Entry-level opportunities exist, but they are not all no-experience roles and competition can be strong.

  • Trades and maintenance: electrical, mechanical, plumbing, welding and fitting.
  • Plant and field work: operators, drill crews, civil crews and production support.
  • Transport and logistics: bus and truck drivers, stores, warehousing and supply.
  • Village and site support: cleaning, catering, hospitality, grounds and utilities.
  • Administration and specialist work: health, safety, environment, HR, engineering and technology.
03What employers commonly look forShow that you understand the role, the workplace and the responsibility.

Requirements differ between roles and employers, so the job advertisement is the starting point. Employers commonly look for evidence that you can work safely, reliably and consistently in a remote team.

  • Relevant experience or clearly explained transferable skills.
  • A strong safety mindset and willingness to follow procedures.
  • Reliability, punctuality, teamwork and clear communication.
  • The required licences, tickets or qualifications for that role.
  • Ability to manage long shifts, remote conditions and time away from home.
  • Medical, fitness-for-work and drug and alcohol screening where required.
04Tickets, licences and trainingRole first. Repeated requirements second. Training spend third.

Do not buy a large bundle of tickets because somebody online says they are all “required for FIFO”. There is no single ticket pack that unlocks every FIFO role.

Read several genuine advertisements for the same role, record the requirements that appear repeatedly, then check which of those requirements you already meet. Spend money only where a verified gap is stopping you from applying for a realistic target role.

  • Check that training is nationally recognised where that matters.
  • Confirm whether a licence must be Australian-issued or recognised in the relevant state.
  • Ask the training provider for the exact unit or qualification code.
  • Treat any course sold with a guaranteed job as a warning sign.
05How to research roles and applyUse a repeatable process instead of applying blindly.

Build a small evidence-based target list, then improve each part of your application around those roles. Keep a simple record so you know what you applied for, what each role required and when to follow up.

  • Choose two or three realistic role types.
  • Read current advertisements from genuine employers, contractors, labour-hire firms and major job platforms.
  • Write down the requirements that appear repeatedly.
  • Compare them with your experience, licences and location.
  • Fix real gaps and build a role-focused résumé.
  • Apply through the organisation’s official careers page or a verified listing.
  • Track applications and keep your expectations realistic.
06FIFO lifestyle and rostersThe roster affects your sleep, relationships, routines and money—not just your days at work.

A first swing can be a major adjustment. Long shifts, heat, early starts, shared facilities, camp rules and being away from family can feel very different from a normal working week.

Talk honestly with the people at home, understand your travel time, protect sleep and build simple routines for work and R&R. Decide what you want FIFO to achieve before the higher income becomes normal spending.

  • Ask how travel days work and whether they fall inside or outside the roster.
  • Plan contact with family around shifts and phone coverage.
  • Expect fatigue and use the employer’s fatigue controls and reporting process.
  • Give the income a purpose from the first pay: buffer, debt, home, skills or another clear goal.
02 / PROTECT YOURSELF

False promises cost more than money.

Pause and independently verify the person, business, job and payment request. A legitimate opportunity should stand up to scrutiny.

Never assume a course, recruiter or payment guarantees entry into FIFO.

Warning signs

A guaranteed FIFO job or placement

An upfront fee for employment

Guaranteed sponsorship, visa approval or migration outcome

Pressure to pay quickly

A company, recruiter or contact that cannot be verified

Requests for inappropriate personal or banking documents

Training sold without a clear role requirement

03 / OVERSEAS APPLICANTS

Helpful, respectful and realistic.

Work rights come first

Australian FIFO employers generally require a lawful right to work in Australia. Sponsorship can exist in some circumstances, but it is not easy, automatic or guaranteed.

Australian requirements matter

Qualifications and licences may need Australian recognition or may need to meet the requirements of the state, employer and role. Overseas experience can still be valuable when it is explained clearly.

Protect your money

Do not spend heavily on Australian tickets, flights, accommodation or third-party services until you have established a realistic lawful pathway to work in Australia.

Use official advice

The FIFO Trap cannot assess visa eligibility and is not a migration agent. Use official Australian Government information or a registered migration professional for advice about your circumstances.

06 / COMMON QUESTIONS

Straight answers before you start.

Can I get a FIFO job with no mining experience?

Some roles are open to people without mining experience, but entry-level does not always mean no experience or no requirements. Start with roles that match your transferable skills, then compare several current advertisements before applying.

What tickets do I need?

There is no single ticket list for every FIFO role. Choose a realistic role first, identify the requirements that repeat across genuine advertisements, and only pay for training that closes a verified gap.

Do I need to live in Perth?

Not always. The point of hire depends on the employer, site and role. Some jobs recruit from Perth, others from regional centres or interstate. Read the advertisement carefully and confirm where employer-paid travel begins.

Can I apply from overseas?

You can research roles from overseas, but Australian employers generally require lawful Australian work rights and may require Australian recognition of qualifications or licences. Establish the lawful pathway before paying heavily for travel, tickets or third-party services.

Does The FIFO Trap find jobs for people?

No. The FIFO Trap is an education and guidance platform, not an employer or recruiter. It helps you understand the pathway and prepare more deliberately, but it does not provide jobs, employer introductions, visas or sponsorship.

Can I pay someone to get me a FIFO job?

Treat guaranteed placement, unusual up-front fees and pressure to pay quickly as red flags. Verify the business, the person, the job and the payment request independently before sharing money or sensitive information.

What kind of résumé should I use?

Use a clear, role-focused résumé that shows relevant duties, achievements, safety exposure, licences, availability and transferable experience honestly. Change the emphasis for the role instead of sending the same generic version everywhere.

What should I do first?

Choose two or three realistic role types, read current advertisements and compare the repeated requirements with what you already have. The free readiness check below can help you decide what to work on next.
